The Digitizing line is suitable for recent and old books. The handling procedure keeps the book in a safe environment at any time. Generally the good or bad condition of the book determines whether or not it may be processed on the Digitizing Line. The Digitizing Line has already processed collections of 300 years old books.

The Digitizing Line turns and scans 1500 to 3000 pages per hour in unattended operation. No human intervention needed except for loading and unloading the book. 4DigitalBooks ensures that only one page is turned at a time using state of the art sheet detection system. No page would be missed or would be scanned twice. The system turns one page at a time from right to left.

Once the book is loaded, an automatic detection of book parameters such as weight, thickness and width allows the Digitizing Line to handle various book formats and thickness.

Books, magazines, bound newspapers and other bound documents can be processed. The system handles books with various and mixed paper thickness, texture, porosity, any soft or rigid cover and accepts slightly bended book covers.

4DigitalBooks has developed a single way to handle books that open normally as well as books that close spontaneously. The Digitizing Line is currently the only commercial system in the world that may handle books that close spontaneously. Many of these books present typically hard back binding. This binding type is often used in recent print industry essentially because of its low cost. However such books do not open easily and have a strong tendency to close spontaneously. They are difficult to maintain opened to be presented under a camera.

In order to keep such a book opened and to turn pages at the same time, it is necessary to have a system that maintains continuously the pages to avoid them to pop up. 4DigitalBooks has designed the Digitizing Line for this purpose and addresses this difficulty in two ways :

During the process : the pages are kept open under the surface of the glass, in a similar way as the hands of a manual page turning operator would do.

During the loading of the book : the pages are kept open by a book maintainer that is temporarily placed on the book and removed by the operator once the glass has taken over the pages.

General characteristics
Automatic detection and adaptation to book parameters in less than 1 minute.
Flexible algorithm to find the best page separation method.
Exceptional productivity estimated to 4 times faster than a human operator.
1 operator can work with 4 digitizing lines simultaneously.
Book parameters recording (presets) allowing a fast way to work with similar books.
Higher image quality: reproductible movements and captures.
Only one page is turned at a time (no human error or productivity variation)
