Safety of documents
Full book protection is mandatory at 4DigitalBooks.
The Digitizing Line is equipped with several sensors that permanently make sure that actions on the page such as : pick-up, separation, turning and releasing of pages are done in a safe way.
The Digitizing line handles the book and the pages very carefully with no friction on pages, and no local pressure on any part of the book. It offers total page protection as there is no pulling strains on the binding, no page may be tear off and no page may be bent.
The book is maintained on the platens of a book cradle by using vacuum aspiration distributed over the surface of the cover of the book, that allows to hold also books with soft covers. The page separator picks up and holds pages using vacuum aspiration distributed over the height of the page. There is no use of any clamps or strings that may locally constraint or damage whatever part of the book.
When pages are presented to the camera, there are no mechanical devices holding the page that may be visible to the camera. The content of the page is 100% preserved and completely visible to the camera. There is no interference or external object on the image.
The glass that covers the page may be set to be either distant or in contact or safely pressed with a selectable force against the pages depending on customer needs. If the glass is set to be distant then it will not at all press the page. If the glass is set to be incontact then it will only touch the popping-up parts of the page and will not press the page.
The book is kept under constant ambient temperature during all the process.
All materials in contact with the book and the page are compatible with document preservation requirements. Librarian safety and chemical regulations are taken into account for the use of materials.
The Digitizing Line opens books at 180° as it would be when placing a book on a table. 4DigitalBooks has identified that opening books at 180° is suitable for a large majority of books and meets the majority of customer requests. Therefore the minority of books that can not be opened so far, have to be excluded from processing on the Digitizing Line.
4DigitalBooks speed of operation allows confidential documents to be scanned without the possibility for a third party one to see the content. Scanned Images may be directly saved to a secure repository.
Safety of operator
Access to a loaded book and to any moving part is restricted by a telescopic operator door. This door is unlocked only when manual intervention is requested or when the process has stopped.
